Carpooling home from ballet
with the other girls
They are graceful
I am gangly
My brown curls
spring free from
the pins
Their sleek blonde strands
stay smooth as ever
Waiting for our ride
I fling my arms into second position
straight into a perfect nose
indignant gasps
angry tears
rolled eyes
our ride arrives
I climb in last
staring at my pink shoes
trying to make myself as small
as the ballerina
in a music box
I love how you captured the moment when we hit life smack in the face. We all have a similar story, but the poetry and pacing of your piece brought my experience crashing from memory to smack in the face! It was good because I reminded myself that I am older now and that was then. Thanks for the lift!
ReplyDeleteSuch a sad but familiar image! I'll bet the sleek, blonde girls felt exactly the same.

ReplyDeleteOh, so sweet and sad. You are able to capture so much in so few words.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone. Such a bittersweet moment beautifully captured in this poem.
