Two lanes
too busy
two hands
on the wheel
windows rolled down
halfway
cold breeze
races in
wreaks havoc
One loose paper
takes a chance
launches from the backseat
flies
in a frenzy
over my shoulder
past my ear
out the window
I see her
in the rearview mirror
rolling
skittering
straight down the yellow line
Nowhere to pull over
I watch
as she grows smaller
a crumpled ball
dodging tires
free to roam the winds
from gutter
to lawn
to rooftop
Perhaps she'll meet
the same fate
as the plastic bag
I saw last week
wingless
trying to fly
but stuck
quivering
in the top of a leafless tree
I wonder
are all chances
worth taking?
I'm wondering what this paper contained. Is it something you don't want to have seen by others or was it just a scrap piece of paper that is insignificant to you. (Somehow, I think you know which one flew out of the car.)
ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure, and I have worried about that! I hope I don't have an important bit of information roaming free out there. Fortunately, I know it's not student work.
DeleteI love the life you gave to the errant piece of paper. I hope she finds her way to a trash can and not a second thought is given to her.
ReplyDeleteHow quickly things can take flight when the conditions are just right. This paper seemed to have a mind of its own.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to explore how little stuff can lead to big stuff. It also reminded me of recently wrangling errant papers, which had escaped their outdoor clipboard home -- twice.
